After the NFTs, will eBay launch into the metaverse?

The betting has begun! Who among the e-commerce industry’s top players will miss the Web 3.0 revolution? Not eBay at all! The e-commerce behemoth has requested that the United States Patent and Trademark Office register two new items (USPTO). Furthermore, it looks that eBay aims to enter the metaverse very soon based on the elements specified in these applications.

eBay has unfinished metaverse-related projects.

Mike Kondoudis, a trademark lawyer who holds USPTO certification, broke the news yesterday.

After checking, it appears that eBay did indeed submit trademark applications to the agency in charge of guarding intellectual property in the US on June 23.

The applicant references both projects connected to the metaverse and cryptoassets in their requests. In actuality, the business would want to diversify its offerings by creating a number of NFT-centered products and services: These consist of:

  • issuing non-fungible tokens through its “NFT Genesis” platform, among other things.
  • A month ago, a collectibles collection was unveiled.
  • digital assets are created and viewed by computer programs.
  • NFT trading platforms using smart contracts

Additionally, it is clear from reading the filing that eBay plans to develop a website where customers can order actual goods or digital assets in addition to a retail location, ostensibly in the metaverse, that will offer both real and virtual goods.

Metaverse and online shopping: a winning combination?

The metaverse is the social interaction of the future, according to some. However, for businesses, it is primarily a business opportunity. And eBay is located right there.

Indeed, eBay earnestly intends to expand its sphere of influence and attract new clients by incorporating this world. All of this is taking place when economies all across the world are suffering. Keep in mind that since November 2021, the company’s share price has decreased by roughly 50%. a drop comparable to what happened to bitcoin (BTC) within the same time period.
