On Thursday, Jim Carrey debuted his first NFT piece, a digital painting titled Sunshower, which contains his reflective narration. His entry into the blockchain realm adds to a growing list of Hollywood stars who are captivated with the cutting-edge digital data system.
According to Carrey’s press announcement, “Originally a painting, Sunshower is an animated NFT that transforms the artwork into a self portrait with a cascade of color accompanied by a meaningful and inspiring perspective written and narrated by the artist.”
Carrey originally painted the piece on canvas with acrylic paint tubes, which he then scraped away, leaving an imprint of the hues. “Creating Sunshower was, in that sense, an exciting cooperation with chance, a long ascent to a dangerous cliff dive,” Carrey explained. “The narration is a celebration of our collective light and those softly lovely moments that occur for us all,” says the author.
SuperRare, an NFT marketplace dedicated to digital artwork, will mint the NFT (blockchain slang for “create”). Since 2018, the platform has facilitated nearly $300 million in “CryptoArt” transactions. Carrey’s auction will begin on June 9 at 12 p.m., with bids starting at $1. Feeding America will receive a share of the revenues.
When Carrey spoke to ET at the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 premiere in March, he alluded about his NFT journey. Following the revelation that he would be taking a sabbatical from acting, he added, “I do paint, you know, I’m going to be painting.” “I’m going to distribute NFTs. I’ll make an announcement on Twitter shortly.”
Carrey now spends many of his days drawing and painting, according to his statement on Thursday, and Sunshower is the conclusion of many years spent attempting to digitize his art for Twitter followers and friends. In collaboration with filmmaker David Bushell, he created the cartoon. ET spoke with Carrey about his artwork at the Sonic The Hedgehog 2 premiere in March, and he teased his NFT debut.
“When the NFT universe opened up, I had only begun to experiment with bringing my art to life through simple animations,” Carrey said in a statement. “There’ll never be enough new places to develop for me.”
Sunshower joins the ranks of other high-profile NFTs developed by celebrities such as Snoop Dogg, Paris Hilton, Grimes, Lindsay Lohan, Shawn Mendes, and Emily Ratajkowski.
